Joseph Gündling, locally better known as “Lukasse Seppl,” started this family’s wine-growing tradition.
He was born in 1901 and at the tender age of six, Seppl already assisted with the grape harvest at the “Wingert” in Michelbach. These formative, early experiences laid the foundation for a livelong love affair with winemaking.
Seppl’s passion for winemaking was passed down to his grandson Armin Heilmann and starting in 1978, the two of them worked as a team. In the following years, Seppl was able to pass along all his knowledge and experience in winemaking to his younger teammate. In appreciation of grandfather Seppl’s accomplishments, his portrait has been incorporated into the company logo.
Over time, Armin acquired additional land for winegrowing by leasing and purchasing plots in the Michelbach appellation of Apostelgarten, Steinberg, and Goldberg. At the core of the estate’s wine production are high-quality Franconian wines such as Riesling, Sylvaner, Bacchus, and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), all of which have won prizes in the past. In the coming years, the varieties St. Laurent and Blauer Frühburgunder will be added to the assortment.
The Michelbach vineyards are located on the Northwestern edge of the Franconian wine region. Despite their Northerly location, the area’s climate is amazingly warm and aside from routinely producing “Kabinett” quality wines, frequently even “Spätlese” wines can be made. The latter are of superb quality when they are made into dry wines.
